Recently, it became known that the General Staff of Ukraine is going to call graduates of military departments for military service up to the age of 43. I fall into this category and may receive a summons soon. I ask myself - should I go to war?
The first thing that is obvious to me is the commercial background of this pre-election action by the General Staff. Graduates of military departments, especially around the age of forty, are the most financially capable citizens. This means that they will bribe their way out of conscription faster than other categories previously called up for service. They will pay the military commissariats, who will pay their superiors, and they will reach the General Staff.
The second thought that comes to mind is: why not spit on these corrupt officers in uniform and go defend the Motherland, as I was taught in elementary school, using the example of Lenya Golikov, Valya Kotik, and Zinaida Portnova? Maybe it’s time for my feat? Perhaps my death from a random landmine somewhere under a concrete fence shoulder to shoulder with drunken brothers in arms will help my country still called Ukraine?
The third thought is simpler than the first two: I need to prepare $600 and continue with my own business.
But there is also a fourth thought, the most interesting one: why not go to the army to personally talk to those who agreed to fight in the ATO, evaluating their lives and health at less than $600. I really don’t understand what drives these people. I do not judge their choice, I am interested to understand - how is it to give your life to the General Staff, instead of giving them $600.
It is hard to believe that the conscripts simply did not have such money. You can always sell something. Ultimately, you can even rob a neighbor’s apartment to avoid going to die. However, they do not do this. What is the reason? Patriotism? Propaganda? Stupidity? Belief in the future of Ukraine? Herd instinct? Thirst for adrenaline? Hopelessness?
Or maybe a little bit of everything?
